Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar
It is often found in puppies, but it also occurs in some adult dogs. The cause is that puppies are not yet fully developed and their liver function is not yet complete, which means that the use of water and sugar from the liver by various organs is not yet complete, especially organs that require a lot of energy such as the brain. Therefore, if a puppy uses too much energy or does not get enough nutrients, it will cause low blood sugar.
Symptoms of low blood sugar include lethargy, not wanting to drink milk, seizures, unconsciousness, and even death. If the owner finds these symptoms, they should see a doctor immediately. The first aid method, if it is not serious, is to feed the dog sweet water or honey in small amounts to bring the sugar level back to normal. This can be observed when the dog regaines its strength.
Puppies at risk of hypoglycemia are newborn puppies that are not fully fed by their mothers and appear weaker than their siblings. If your dog has this condition, it is recommended that the owner separate it and provide close care.
