How is sterilization in dogs good?

There are many reasons why dog owners do not neuter their dogs, such as fear of sin, making it a sin to not have puppies, or not wanting to hurt animals because reproduction is a natural process. Is neutering really animal cruelty? Let’s listen to these reasons.

Veterinarian Kanokphan Chotikavanich (Dr. Tik), a doctor of internal medicine at Talingchan Animal Hospital, provided information that sterilization has advantages, such as reducing the incidence of reproductive system diseases. In severe cases, it can lead to cancer. It reduces the incidence of uterine inflammation. It reduces the incidence of mammary tumors. If sterilization is performed before the first heat, it can reduce the incidence of mammary tumors by up to 95%. It reduces prostate enlargement in males. It reduces aggressive behavior, reduces behavior of running away and raising legs to urinate in the area in male dogs. Finally, sterilization is a permanent method of birth control that helps reduce the incidence of stray dogs in another way.

Neutering is therefore beneficial to the dog's own health in terms of various diseases and reduced aggressive behavior, resulting in a peaceful relationship between dog and owner. Neutering also helps society by reducing the number of stray dogs. Therefore, we should all neuter our dogs.

How do they neuter dogs?

In female dogs, spaying involves removing the entire uterus and ovaries, which requires opening the abdomen. In male dogs, spaying involves removing both testicles and the vas deferens.

Therefore, dogs that are neutered must be healthy and not anemic, as they will need to be put under anesthesia. Before the neutering surgery, the dog should have a blood test to check its health to ensure it is ready to be safely administered anesthesia. If the dog is in good health and well, the day before the neutering, it should withhold food and water for 8-12 hours before the surgery.

And after the sterilization surgery, the wound must be dressed after surgery. You should go to the veterinarian's appointment to dress the wound. Take care of the wound so it doesn't get wet, doesn't get infected, doesn't allow the dog to lick the wound, doesn't allow the wound to get dirty. You can use a collar to prevent licking, and if the wound is normal, the stitches can be removed within 7-10 days after the surgery.

Appropriate age for sterilization

Currently, there are studies and research confirming that we can neuter dogs from 4 months of age and up.

**Spaying both male and female dogs during childhood has been scientifically proven to be safe, with no dangerous side effects. Undesirable side effects are less common than in older dogs.**

Side effects of sterilization

Neutering a dog will reduce hormones, causing the dog to become fatter because the body's metabolism is reduced. Various activities are also reduced. This makes it more likely for a neutered dog to gain weight and become fatter. However, owners can control the weight of their neutered dog by choosing the right food and trying to let the dog exercise as well.

Another side effect is urinary incontinence, which is common in female dogs due to hormonal changes that cause the urethra and bladder to malfunction. However, this is a rare condition that can be treated with medication.

Choosing a hospital or clinic to neuter your dog

When it comes to dog sterilization, the most important factor is the owner when deciding on a medical facility, clinic, or animal hospital. Factors that dog owners should consider when taking their dog for sterilization include a sterile operating room, surgical equipment, the veterinarian's expertise, and pre-operative blood tests. Even though sterilization is not a major issue, if risk factors are found, sterilization can endanger the life of our dog.

Let's get our dogs neutered.

Neutering dogs is something that should be promoted and supported because in addition to being good for the dog's health, it also reduces various problems for dog owners that arise from aggressive behavior when the dog is in heat. It also benefits society as a whole by helping reduce the problem of stray dogs because stray dogs are often caused by owners who cannot take care of them and abandon them in temples and stray dog shelters, which becomes a burden to society as a whole. Therefore, neutering dogs is definitely good.
