A torn knee ligament is a condition that all dogs can experience. The causes of a torn knee ligament are divided into 2 types: acute and chronic. 1. Acute: Usually caused by an accident, such as a dog falling into a hole, causing the hind leg to twist inward, causing the knee ligament to be pulled excessively and eventually torn. 2. Chronic: Dogs often have osteoarthritis from a dislocated patella for a long time, which predisposes them to a torn knee ligament. Most dogs, around 80%, tend to have chronic ligament damage.
