Blood type in dogs
The dog's blood group system (Dog Erythrocyte Antigen: DEA) is determined by antigens on the surface of red blood cells. An individual dog may have more than one blood group. There are currently 8 blood groups.
namely
DEA 1.1, 1.2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 The blood group test kit for dogs (Alvedia canine Quick test) will only detect the concentration level of antigens whether there is or is not an antigen. It is tested only once in a lifetime. It will be divided into 2 types: positive blood group and negative blood group as follows:
DEA 1 + positive (positive blood group) includes DEA 1.1 and 1.2. There will be antigens on the surface of red blood cells. If the donor is positive, he/she can only donate blood to a recipient who is also positive. The recipient who is positive can receive blood from both positive and negative blood groups.
DEA 1 – negative (negative blood group) includes DEA 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, there will be no antigen on the surface of red blood cells. If the blood donor is negative blood group, they will be able to donate blood to both positive and negative blood group recipients. As for the negative blood group recipients, they will only receive blood from negative blood groups.

In theory, the best blood transfusion is one that has the same antigens and antibodies from the donor and the recipient. Therefore, in practice, to reduce and prevent allergic reactions to blood, Talingchan Animal Hospital offers a blood group testing service for dogs to find the correct antigens and performs a cross match test to see the reaction of antibodies to antigens every time before a blood transfusion.
