Things you may not know about sterilizing dogs and cats

Many people, including pet owners, already know that sterilization is a permanent method of birth control. However, many people may not know that sterilization for dogs and cats also has other benefits besides birth control, such as reducing the chances of various diseases that may occur in our pets. Today, Talingchan Animal Hospital will share information about sterilization for dogs and cats.

Sterilization of dogs and cats

* Although sterilization can be started from 4 months old, in terms of appropriateness, it is recommended to start at 6 months old for the safety of the sterilized cat.

** Sterilization does not only depend on the age of the dog or cat, but also on the weight of the dog. If the weight is lower than the specified criteria, anesthesia may not be possible.

Sterilization Procedure

  1. Blood test - To check the blood values in the body to see if it is ready for sterilization. If abnormal blood values are found, sterilization cannot be performed and the values must be taken care of to return to normal before proceeding to the next step.
  2. Do not eat or drink for 8-12 hours before undergoing sterilization surgery. – To prevent choking on food or water during surgery.
  3. Anesthesia and surgery - When all aspects are ready, perform the surgery.
  4. After surgery – Pets will need to receive surgical wound care until the wound is completely dry (this can be done by yourself or taken to a clinic or hospital near your home).
  5. Cut the stitches – 7-10 days after surgery when the wound is dry and there is no infection.

How to care for dogs and cats after sterilization

Taking care of your dog's and cat's wounds after spaying is another thing that needs to be given importance to prevent infection and help the wound heal faster.

  1. Take antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications as prescribed by your veterinarian.
  2. Do not allow dogs or cats to lick or chew on the wound. You may wear a lick-preventing device, such as a collar or a lick-preventing suit.
  3. Do not let the wound get wet for 1 week.
  4. For male cats, apply an antibiotic (Betadine) to the wound daily until it heals.

How to care for dogs and cats after having their stitches removed

  1. Control your diet and choose the right foods. – Neutered dogs or cats should eat food formulated for neutered pets to control their weight and prevent them from becoming overweight.
  2. Exercise properly – Owners should find activities such as taking them for walks or swimming to keep them healthy and moving their bodies regularly.

Advantages of sterilization

As mentioned above, sterilization is a permanent method of birth control, but there are more advantages to sterilization, such as:

  • Reduce the risk of reproductive system diseases Such as uterine inflammation, breast tumors, and the reduction of benign prostatic hyperplasia in males, which if severe can become cancerous.
  • Reduce aggressive behavior Due to a decrease in testosterone levels
  • Reduce escapism behavior To find a mate, including urinating in the wrong place

Side effects of sterilization

  1. Pets are gaining weight – Since sterilization reduces sex hormones, which reduces the body’s metabolism, owners can control their pet’s weight by choosing the right food formula and exercising regularly.
  2. Post-sterilization urinary incontinence (Urinary Incontinence) – This condition is common in females, caused by hormonal changes that cause the urethra and bladder to function abnormally. However, this condition is very rare and can be cured with medication.
  3. Difficulty urinating– It can happen to male cats.

Spaying and neutering pets not only helps to improve their health and reduce the risk of diseases, but also plays an important role in controlling the stray dog and cat population. The decision to spay or neuter should be made carefully, and pet owners should do their research and consult their veterinarian for appropriate advice before proceeding.
