Anal gland

ต่อมข้างก้น หรือต่อมเหม็น

Anal gland It is a gland located beside the anus of dogs and cats, in the same line on both the left and right sides. This anal gland is responsible for producing the dog's unique scent, which each dog has a unique scent. It is noticeable that when dogs meet for the first time, they often walk up and sniff each other's butts to get to know each other from that unique scent.

In addition, the anal glands, or odor glands, also secrete a secretion through a small channel connected to the anus. When a dog is irritated, startled, or stressed when having to leave its territory, this secretion will spread its scent to mark its territory. This substance will appear as a light brown liquid, sometimes having the appearance of a yellow wax.

Common problems with this gland are blockage caused by constipation, hard stools, a small gland opening, sticky, starchy secretions, or overactive glands caused by the dog being excited all day.

Anal gland or anal gland blockage has three levels of severity:

  1. Impaction level When the fluid in the gland begins to thicken, or sometimes even harden,
  2. Infection level This stage causes pus to form from the bacterial infection in the anal glands.
  3. Abscess level It becomes an abscess, swollen, and ruptured from a more severe infection.

Treatment will cure Symptoms range from squeezing out, taking medication, or surgically removing the abscess if the gland is blocked and inflamed.

Dog breeds that are frequently found to have problems with anal glands or odor glands are usually small breeds such as Chihuahuas, Miniature Pinschers, English Cocker Spaniels.

Symptoms that show that your baby's anal glands have problems are: If your dog scrapes its bottom against the floor, tries to lick its anus, and has obvious swelling of the anal glands and bleeding, if you experience any of these abnormalities, you should immediately take it to see a veterinarian for treatment, as blocked anal glands can be cured.
